The history of exchanging cards and other tokens of love on February 14th actually began in England and France in the 14th century. This very popular tradition spilled over to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The early cards were constructed from real lace, ribbon and colorful pictures known as “scrap”. Starting in the 19th century, the practice of handmade notes and cards succumbed to the exchange of mass-produced greeting cards. An estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card sending holiday of the year.
According to Hallmark research, over 50 percent of all Valentine Day cards are purchased in the six days prior to the actual holiday. Some people would beg to differ here. Have you ever been to Walgreens the day before Valentine’s Day to purchase a card? Yes, I think they should change this statement to the day BEFORE Valentine’s Day!
Most cards these days are accompanied by a small gift or token of affection from a loved one or family member. The most popular Valentines gifts are chocolate or roses, with jewelry rounding out the top gifts for this occasion. These are all fine, but a little boring if you ask me.
